The Challenge

DoD-Ready Infrastructure

The customer developed an innovative augmented reality (AR) remote maintenance solution through SBIR work with their federal partners. The platform enables personnel at remote locations, aboard ships or at austere bases, to receive real-time engineering assistance from subject matter experts at depots and Fleet Readiness Centers.

The proof-of-concept validated the technical approach and demonstrated clear operational value, but it was built and running in Azure Commercial. Advancing to the next phase of the program meant migrating the entire platform to Azure Government, a fundamentally different environment with its own compliance boundaries, network isolation requirements, and service availability constraints. Several Azure Commercial services the platform relied on were either unavailable or operated differently in GovCloud, requiring targeted rearchitecting to maintain feature parity.

Beyond the immediate migration, the architecture needed to be built with portability in mind. The program’s roadmap called for future deployment to IL5 and IL6 environments, each introducing progressively stricter data handling, encryption, and network segmentation requirements under the DISA Cloud Computing SRG. Every infrastructure decision had to account for where the platform was headed, not just where it was going next.

The Solution

An Azure Government Deployment Driven by IaC

Fully Automated Provisioning & Deployment

We delivered a completely automated infrastructure provisioning and software deployment solution, from bare subscription to fully operational platform. The entire environment can be stood up in 2–3 hours with no manual intervention beyond approving the pipeline run. This level of automation is what makes the architecture truly portable: spinning up in a new region or a higher-impact-level environment is not a multi-week project, it’s an afternoon.

Infrastructure as Code

All infrastructure is defined and managed through Terraform, enabling repeatable deployments, version-controlled configuration, and consistent environments across regions. This approach supports rapid iteration while maintaining the strict change control required for government systems.

Cloud Architecture

We designed a modern, event-driven architecture aligned with Azure’s Well-Architected Framework, optimized for real-time collaboration workloads. The solution is deployed across multiple Azure Government regions, providing geographic redundancy and operational resilience.

The Results

An Award-Winning Solution

1 yearPrototype to production in Azure Government

We successfully transitioned the platform from proof-of-concept to production-ready in one year, deploying across dual Azure Government regions. The platform is now fully operational in Azure Government and supporting active maintenance workflows.

What began as a focused infrastructure engagement has evolved into an ongoing partnership. We’ve been maintaining and enhancing the solution for the past two years. The architecture was designed with portability in mind, and the program is currently in discussions for deployment to Azure Flank Speed (IL5) environments. Most recently, the solution was announced as a finalist for the 2025 DoD Maintenance Innovation Challenge.
